Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu on Saturday said Vitamin A increases disease resistance in babies, reduces death risks, prevents night blindness and other diseases.
He inaugurated the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign- 2015 through administering Vitamin A Plus Capsule to a number of under five-year age group babies at his Guptapara residence in the city as the chief guest.
The campaign was conducted under the the Public Health and Nutrition Institute and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with assistance of UNICEF and World Health Organisation (WHO).
The City Mayor said Vitamin A Plus Capsule has no side effect in general, the parents must not be afraid if their babies would show vomiting tendency after taking the capsule and asked them to contact the concerned health officials.
“Vitamin A Plus also prevents mal-nutritional blindness, especially night blindness, bitot’s spots and corneal lesions,” he said.
Jhantu also thanked the parents for playing their due role in making the campaign successful for preventing various diseases of their babies and ensure their healthy growth by increasing disease resistance capacities.
More than 99 percent of the targeted one lakh 29 thousand and 300 under-five babies were administered with Vitamin A Plus Capsules in all 33 wards in the city on Saturday.
Twenty-six supervisors and 873 volunteers were engaged in providing Vitamin A Plus Capsule at 291 outreach centres including 279 permanent and 12 satellite centres in all 33 wards of the city corporation area.
One dose of one lakh unit Vitamin A Blue capsule was administered to each of the 22 thousand 500 babies aged between 6 and 11 months, one dose of two lakh unit Vitamin A Red capsule to each of one lakh six thousand 800 babies aged between 12 and 59 months.
